What this book is.
An educational workbook. It teaches a framework — cognitive behavioural therapy — that licensed therapists use with their clients, in plain language, with practical worksheets. It is appropriate for adults who want to think more clearly about their drinking, slow it down, take a break, or stop.
What this book is not.
- Not a diagnosis. It cannot tell you whether you have alcohol use disorder.
- Not therapy. Reading a book is not the same as working with a licensed clinician.
- Not detox. It cannot manage physical alcohol withdrawal, which can be medically dangerous.
- Not emergency care. If something is acute, please use the crisis resources above.
When you need a clinician, not a book
Please talk to a doctor or mental health professional, in addition to or instead of this book, if any of the following apply to you:
- You drink daily or near-daily and have been doing so for years
- You experience physical withdrawal symptoms when you stop — shaking, sweating, nausea, racing heart, seizures
- You have a history of alcohol use disorder, eating disorders, or addictive disorders
- You are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
- You take medication that interacts with alcohol
- You are experiencing severe depression, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm
- You are in a relationship where your safety is at risk
Quitting alcohol cold-turkey after heavy daily use can cause serious medical complications, including seizures, in a small minority of people. If you fall in this category, please consult a clinician before stopping.

Results vary
Like any educational program, the workbook works for some people and not for others. Reading every page does not guarantee any specific outcome. The story you bring to it shapes what you get from it.
